Fresh Cut Flower Care Tips from Adams Fairacre Farms
February 9, 2025
Fresh flowers bring a lot of life into a room, but caring for fresh cut flowers matters more than most people realize. A clean cut, fresh water, and the right spot can help your bouquet look beautiful for days, while a few common missteps can shorten its life. These simple do’s and don’ts will help you get the most out of your flowers from the moment you bring them home.
Fresh Flower Care: Do’s and Don’ts
What to Do
- Cut flower stem ends with a sharp knife or clippers to create a fresh surface that can properly take up water.
- Use a clean vase. Soap and water help remove bacteria that can shorten flower life.
- Keep flowers out of direct sunlight to prevent premature wilting.
What to Avoid
- Do not use softened water. It contains salt, which can damage flowers. If you have a water softener, use bottled water instead.
- Do not place flowers near fruit. Ethylene gas released by ripening fruit causes flowers to age faster.
- Do not put flowers on or near a heater. We once had a customer place a bouquet on top of a pizza oven. All we can say is—don’t.
