Hiking Charcuterie Tips
September 30, 2026
- Bring a small wooden cutting board and a camping knife.
- Bring an ice pack.
- Pack things like crackers and grapes in deli containers or tins instead of bags so they don’t get crushed in your backpack.
- Choose hard cheeses over soft ones. They travel better and are much less messy.
- Bring seasonal fruit. In the fall, think grapes, apples, pears, etc.
- Shelf-stable cured meats are the most backpack-friendly.
- Always bring something briny: cornichons, pickles, olives, etc. Drain off the liquid before packing them.
- Bring at least one cloth napkin.
- And always pack a little something sweet, like a good bar of chocolate.
- Use any containers you brought for garbage and leftovers. Leave no trace!
