Pruning Shrubs
Late summer is an important time for pruning shrubs in the Hudson Valley, helping plants stay healthy and encouraging continued growth into the fall. It’s time to give your shrubs a haircut. Join Maureen Drury, Middletown Houseplant and Nursery Department Manager, as she shows you how to clean up your garden and encourage late season blooms!
In this video, Maureen walks through when to prune, how much to cut back, and how proper pruning can improve the shape and health of your shrubs.
As a general rule, prune shrubs after they finish flowering. This helps maintain their natural shape while supporting future growth. When pruning, focus on creating a soft, rounded form rather than cutting straight across. While the plant may look trimmed back at first, it will fill out again within a few weeks.
