Pruning Hydrangeas in the Spring

Early spring is the ideal time to prune many hydrangeas in the Hudson Valley, before new growth gets too far along. The weather is just starting to warm up, but it’s important to get out there and do some pruning before your hydrangeas get too far along. Pruning them now will lead to even more blooms this year. Join Maureen Drury, Adams Town of Wallkill Houseplant and Nursery Manager, in her garden as she teaches you how to become a hydrangea pruning pro.

In this video, Maureen shows how to identify leaf nodes and where to make your cuts to encourage fuller, healthier plants.

When pruning hydrangeas, look for leaf nodes along the stems and cut back two to three nodes from last year’s growth. This encourages the plant to branch out, often producing multiple new stems and more blooms from each cut.

Visit Adams Fairacre Farms in Poughkeepsie, Middletown, Newburgh, Kingston or Wappingers Falls for hydrangeas, pruning tools, and expert advice tailored to New York growing conditions. You can find a wide selection of flowering shrubs in our nursery.
