The brilliant deep purple foliage provides a wonderful mass of color and offsets delightful sprays of tiny, white, summer flowers. A great choice for adding color and contrast to borders when coupled with green foliage plants. Evergreen in mild winter areas; an herbaceous perennial in colder regions.

An exquisite small perennial that should be grouped with others of similar stature and quality. Ideal in the front of rock gardens and perennial borders, where they will be fully appreciated. Since it blooms under some shade, it is a valuable transition plant linking shaded flowering shrubs with sun-loving ones. Take advantage of the bronze coloring by using as an edging plant or against variegated backgrounds.

Best grown in organically rich, humusy, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Does well in full sun in the northern part of its range. If grown in full sun, consistent moisture is needed and soil should not be allowed to dry out. Remove stems of faded flower panicles to encourage continued bloom. Bloom is more apt to repeat in cool summer climates than hotter ones. In cold winter climates, a winter mulch applied after the ground freezes will help prevent root heaving. Clumps are shallow-rooted and will develop woody bases rather quickly. Divide clumps every 3-4 years in the spring.
