Modern day wind chimes make beautiful sounds when there is a breeze, but where do wind chimes come from? Who invented wind chimes? What are wind chimes used for? How should you hang them in your home?

Who Invented Wind Chimes?
The journey of the history of wind chimes goes from Ancient Rome to China. In China, around the year 1100 BC is when the “modern” wind chime came to live. From there it spread to other Eastern and Southern Asian countries like Japan and India.

The main use of using a wind chime in those times was to keep away evil spirits. They were often hung in temples to achieve that result.

Sometimes, wind chimes had a more practical use like scaring away birds from farming lands via the sounds of a chime.

A modern use of wind chimes is mostly for decorative purpose, however, there are also some folks that use wind chimes in balance with Feng Shui. The purpose of this use is to maximize the flow of chi or your life’s energy.

What Are Wind Chimes Used For?

Wind chimes and spirits
Many years ago people believed that the sounds of a chime would keep evil spirits away. As of today people still search Google for phrases like:

  • Wind chimes and death
  • Wind chimes and ghosts

Although today, people do not use wind chimes to scare off evil ghosts anymore, they instead use wind chimes for their soothing sounds or in memory of a lost loved one.

Wind chimes and Feng Shui
Feng Shui is a way to combat negative energy in your home and change it to positive energy. The negative energy can come from problems with neighbors or the home itself.

There are generally three factors that are important for wind chimes and Feng Shui:

  1. The material of the chime
  2. The symbol displayed on the chime
  3. Numbers associated with the chime

Best Types of Wind Chimes for Feng Shui
Metal wind chimes are generally best if your intention is to call in the metal energy qualities like precision, communication, or organization. Look for wind chimes with hollow cylinders as well.

If you find a wind chime made of another material like crystals, seashells, or glass, listen to your intuition. If you are attracted to them, go for it. You can also select a color that’s connected to one of the five elements you want to attract.

  • Earth element is the color brown or yellow. Use earth element to invite in self-care, grounding, and balance.
  • Metal element is white or metallics. Use metal element to welcome joy, precision, and beauty.
  • Water element is black. Use water element to bring in wisdom and enhance your career.
  • Wood element is blue or green. Invite in wood element for growth, kindness, and flexibility.
  • Fire element is red and welcomes passion, inspiration, and visibility.

It’s also important to choose wind chimes that have a sound that you enjoy; this should be a positive addition to your home, not one that annoys you.

In terms of size, bigger wind chimes are generally more impactful, but use your judgment — if it feels overwhelming for the space, it’s probably too big.

A wind chime with five cylinders is the most auspicious because it represents the five elements of earth, metal, fire, water and wood. These five elements are what make up the world around us, and one of the goals of feng shui is to keep these five elements in balance.

How to Hang Wind Chimes for Feng Shui
Once you’ve chosen your wind chimes and decided where in your home you’d like to place them, it’s time to hang them! We recommend you use a red ribbon or string to hang the chime because red is the most auspicious color in feng shui. It’s a powerful color that enhances the energetics of your adjustment. Make sure you also hang them far enough away from any walls that they have space to chime freely.
